5 violations that could result in a traffic ticket

Many New York residents find joy in driving. It can allow you to get to your intended destination, and it can act as an enjoyable activity, especially if you are a car enthusiast. However, if you do not follow the rules of the road, you could easily end up pulled over by police and possibly end up with a traffic ticket.

A number of violations could result in an officer issuing you a ticket. However, simply receiving a ticket does not mean that you are guilty of a crime or that your only option is to pay the ticket. Just as with any other type of accusation, you have the right to defend yourself in court if you wish to do so. Of course, understanding the violation associated with your ticket is important.

Types of traffic violations

In many cases, police officers issue traffic tickets for relatively minor violations, but in some cases, that seemingly minor violation could lead to serious outcomes, such as a car accident. If so, the ticket you receive could come with more severe potential consequences. Some types of violations for which you could receive a ticket include the following:

  • Speeding: Though many people drive over the posted speed limit, if police catch you doing so, they could issue you a citation.
  • Reckless driving: Various activities could constitute reckless driving -- such as racing on public streets or passing in a no-passing zone -- and could result in a ticket.
  • Hit-and-run: A hit-and-run means that you were involved in an accident and left the scene. This violation is one of the more serious actions that could result in a ticket and other consequences.
  • Distracted driving: Numerous car accidents result from distracted driving, and an officer could stop your vehicle and give you a ticket if he or she suspects distracted driving.
  • Running a red light or stop sign: Traffic directions are in place to help make roadways safer. If you disregard a traffic light or stop sign, you could put yourself and others in danger and will likely receive a citation to boot.

These examples are only a few of the reasons an officer could give you a traffic ticket.

Fighting a ticket

As mentioned, you have the right to defend against the consequences of a traffic ticket. Your available defense options may depend on the type of ticket you receive. Therefore, you may wish to thoroughly review your case and obtain an evaluation of your situation from a legal professional who could help you understand your options.
